Flux Canyon Road Mileages - approx

8.7 miles from Patagonia Post Office via Harshaw Road, turn Right at big sign for Flux Canyon and zero odometer

Miles

0.8 - Sharp bend right; small dry stock-pond on left (south). Trail starts behind pond, 100 yds up is good quail spot. Continue if birdy. Road to right of pond goes above different drainage. Walk up a couple of hundred yards.

1.4 - Water monitoring site with blue barrels. Always wet; cat-tails and tules. Can walk entirely around, but may be wet in one spot. Could have yellowthroat, Swamp Sparrow, Marsh Wren, etc. Northern Pygmy Owl lives in area. Many birds come to drink here.

1.5 - FR 4698 (???) on left (south). Confluence with Humboldt Canyon. Alum Gulch here is wet all the way down past World's Fair Mine (2008). Bird entire confluence area. Trogon, Pygmy-owl, and Montezuma Quail all seen here occasionally. Another count group will be covering Lower Humboldt Canyon itself, but you can trade-off or double cover. Side road in Lower Humboldt is about 1.25 miles long.

1.7 - Park near Alum Gulch Crossing. Follow downstream to right. Top of "waterfall is in about one-quarter to half a mile. Many plunge pools and shady wet spots.

1.9 - Good view down into Alum Gulch, above World's Fair Mine. Check canopy for foraging flocks. Look for raptors.

2.2 - Old road down into World's Fair Mine on right. Entrance blocked by berm, mud puddle in road by berm (2008). Walk down old road, stay far right past scraped area. Enter stream-bed, walk up to "waterfall". Small section with tall pines could be best. Also walk downstream past mine as far as you reasonably can. Notch with pools will probably stop you.

3.2 - Upper Flux Canyon Road, FR 215. Climbs up and over abase of upper Flux Canyon. many pines, huge canyon complex above. Explore as much as you can, but stay in a group - high traffic area! Montezuma Quail, Trogon, Olive Warbler, Pygmy-owl, Arizona Woodpecker, Painted Redstart, are all possible.

3.8 - Good view back up into Flux Canyon complex. Look for soaring raptors. You probably don't need to go any farther. Extra time could be used in upper Flux or Lower Humboldt Canyon. Enjoy views (Road does continue on to join Rt 82 about 2 miles south of Patagonia, but Flux Canyon Road gets very narrow and extremely rough in a few spots beyond here).
