Patagonia Dump Pond

UNDER DEVELOPMENT - map still to be done.

A small pond lies approximately south of the Patagonia town dump. This pond often has a few ducks in the winter (gadwall, wigeon, teal) and killdeer.

To find the pond, drive out of Patagonia by turning northwest off Highway 82 onto 1st Avenue (by the High School). This road changes its name quickly to Gringo Road and then to Temporal Canyon Road.

You will pass a number of houses and trailers and eventually climb onto an open area with scattered oaks and junipers. The road is well graded and comes shortly to the town dump, as indicated by a sign to the left. Turn left here and go past the dump. Distance from Highway 82 to the turn is about 1.9 miles.

Continue along the road, which heads more or less south. A barbed wire fence is on the right (west side of road) around the dump. This fence eventually stops, but continue south along the road, which climbs a small hill and then dips down again. Several small roads turn off to the left, but keep on the "main" dirt road.

After about three-quarters of a mile, you will reach a flat, beaten down area littered with shotgun shell casings and trash. A small road sneaks sharply down and to the right from this area. It is hard to see this turn until you are on the flat area.

This "road" is very washed out in some spots and it might be better to walk, but it can be driven with care.

The pond is at the bottom of the hill and is surrounded by long grass and a few reeds.
